1. For nearly fifty years, Bessie Smith's power and majesty have been compromised by abysmal-sounding LP and CD reissues. Columbia's four "Bessie Smith Story" LPs from the early '50s were soaked in reverb, while its comprehensive two-LP sets from the '70s were dulled by analog notch filtering that thinned the sound of the superbly recorded 78s.
