The major work here is a cantata, the so-called 'Figure Humaine' (probably best translated as 'The Face of Mankind'), to poems written secretly during the German occupation of France during World War II by Poulenc's self-admitted favorite poet, Paul Éluard. Poulenc, too, wrote the cantata in secret and it wasn't premièred until after the War/5(3).
